
Lavender
The word lavender comes from Latin ‘lavare’ which
means washing. Since Antiquity, it nicely perfumes linen, bath and house,
prevent from moles, clothes moth, flies and mosquitoes. His culture permits to
give live back to many fallowed lands at the end of the XIXth century in high
Provencal plateau. Thanks to it, essence lavender owe its reputation. The
essence is extracted from the flower with an ancestral process: the steam
distillation. To produce about 1 pound of essence, an average number of 120
pounds of flowers has to be collected. Every summer, high plateaus, Provencal
hill colline are colored in blue, and so the whole Provence makes the lavender
feast: distilleries open their doors and manufacturers expose and sale the essential oils,
perfumes, soaps or dries flowers.
